Information Released by our IT Department
As Chromebooks continue to be a key device for staff and students, IT Services wants to provide important dates around vendor AUE (Auto Update Expiration). AUE is the policy whereby Google ensures a device receives regular software and security updates. When a device reaches AUE, these updates are no longer provided, meaning; after the AUE date is reached, existing and future policies may not work as intended, and technical support will not be provided.
The following first and second generation deployed models in our system will be affected
Lenovo N21 Chromebook Sep 2021
Lenovo N22 Chromebook Jun 2022
Lenovo N23 Chromebook Jun 2022
We are losing the use of a lot of cameras on the chromebooks. External cameras will now cost $29.00 each and any key needing replacing will be $5.00
The cost of repairing chromebooks may become prohibitive. We may have to establish chromebooks whose cameras do not work therefore are just used at school in comparison to those chromebooks that can be sent home during a provincial shut-down.
Land Acknowledgment
- All schools across Niagara Catholic have incorporated a Land Acknowledgment into their morning opening exercises.
- I created a powerpoint explaining Turtle Island and the Dish with One Spoon Wampum agreement to the staff and they in turn can explain it to their students throughout the rest of the school year.
- This will bring the needed context to the words that are being said; to bring a greater understanding and respect to the acknowledgment being said.
Ministry of Education and Remote Learning for 2021/2022
- We have been told through a news release that the Ministry of Education has stated all school Boards across Ontario will offer remote learning. How this will play out, and how this will look within NCDSB is unknown at this time.
Classroom/Teacher Assignments
- We thank Mrs. Traynor and wish her well as she journeys to a new school next September. Thank you for all that you have done for St. James Catholic
- We wish Mrs. Anzik all of the best in the next chapter of her life. Enjoy retirement!
- We wish the same for Miss Kevins. Enjoy retirement!
- Until remote learning has been solidified, the announcement of classroom/teacher assignments will be on hold.
Ministry of Education Return to 2020/2021 School Year
- There is a rumour circulating that schools within Ontario will reopen prior to the end of this school year. We as a Board have yet to be informed as to when this may take place.
St. James Catholic Sports Uniforms
- Uniforms have come in. 41 shirts and shorts were purchased for a total cost of $2,260.00. This will enable both boys and girls to participate on the same day.
Mom’s Pantry
- Our profit from this year’s fundraiser was $1,088.13. This is less than what we normally would raise, however taking into consideration the year we are having with COVID-19 and the needs of families, we have done very well. Thank you to all families for their support.
Chromebooks for Grade 2’s going into Grade 3 next year
- We have 14 new chromebooks for the Grade 2s going into grade 3 next year. It’s not the total that we need, however we can take a few from the current grade 8s who will be leaving.
Kindergarten Virtual Welcome Night
- Will be virtual this year on Wednesday, June 2 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Parents will be called and they and their children will be invited to join on-line to meet their classroom teachers and ECEs
- Would anyone like to join the link to bring greeting on behalf of the St. James Catholic School Council? Perhaps introduce yourselves, invite families to join, etc.
-
As of right now we have 15 students registered for Kindergarten Year 1 for this coming September. On-line registration is available 24/7 through the Board’s website.
Graduation
- Will take place on Tuesday, June 22, 2021
- We are waiting on a memo from Senior Administration regarding graduation
- We are currently planning a drive thru graduation with specific time allotments selected by families
- We have ordered a balloon archway with number balloons stating 2021
- We have ordered Grad t-shirts for the students (they came up with the writing) and a personalized sugar cookie
- In class, students are working on their yearbook websites which include items about themselves, favourite memories and the like. Mr. Sabatini will be working on QR codes as well.
- We are also working on personalized bookmarks for the students with wordles on the back based on the positive characteristics given by their peers.
Year End Mass/Graduation Mass
- I have asked Father what his thoughts were regarding either a mass at the church for our Graduates on a Sunday near the end of June or a possible virtual mass with the two Grade 8 classes. Father would like to wait for a bit before deciding how we will proceed with the Grad mass. He did state however that he is receptive to a mass or liturgy. As well, he will write a little something for the grad program that is being created.
Sacrament of Confirmation and First Holy Communion
- The Sacrament of Confirmation will take place next fall for the 2020-2021 school year.
- I know that Father has sent a recent letter out to families regarding the Sacrament of First Holy Communion.
Agendas
- The staff has decided not to order agendas for this coming school year. Almost all communication is being made through NCVLE and phone calls
Grad Hoodies/Spiritwear
- From Big Bear Spiritwear
- The 2021-2022 Grad Hoodies will be available for purchase May 20th. The hoodies arrive to the school the first week of September if ordered on-line by July 15th.
