SEEDS OF FAITH: MASS

SEPTEMBER- Seeds of Faith

God plants seeds of faith in every moment of every day, although often those seeds go unnoticed, falling on rocky ground or among the thorns. As a Catholic School community, we are blessed to learn and grow in an environment which allows seeds of faith to take root and together we can work to nurture and support those seeds as they grow.

Sometimes the seeds of faith that are planted are small, and to some may seem unworthy of attention, but as Jesus reminds us, even with faith as small as a mustard seed, nothing is impossible. When we cultivate that faith, actively tending to the needs of our spiritual lives, our roots grow deeper and our faith stronger.

OCTOBER- Eucharist: Source and Summit

The Eucharist, “the source and summit of the Christian Life” (Lumen Gentium, 11), is the seed of faith which encompasses all that we are and believe as Catholics. It is the Word made flesh (John 1:14), Christ Himself, that nourishes the soul and allows Christians to become the soil which sustains the whole world (Synod of Bishops, The Eucharist: The Source and Summit of the Christian Life and Mission of the Church, 2). The gift of Christ, made present in the Eucharist, is the summit of our faith as it unites us as members of the one Body of Christ. It is also the source through which we are nourished and sustained to live out the life and mission of the Church.

Throughout this month of October, may our exploration and focus on the Mass, and in particular the Eucharist, remind us of its importance in our lives and in the life of the whole Church.

NOVEMBER- Liturgy of the Word: Prayers

In the Liturgy of the Word we come together to hear the Word of God in the Scriptures. It is a celebration not simply of what God has said, but of what God is saying to us today, speaking to our hearts and souls. It is a conversation and we are called to respond in prayer. The words and gestures we say and do at Mass are an expression to God of our belief in and our love for Him.

In the month of November, may we grow in our awareness of the words we say at Mass, taking time to reflect on what they mean and why we say them!

DECEMBER- Liturgy of the Word: Scripture

Through the Scriptures, we are guided and instructed in faith and in how to live in right relationship with God, others, ourselves, and creation.

The Bible isn’t meant to remain as words on a page; it is there for us to read, to reflect upon, and to live out in our daily lives. When we listen to the Scriptures at Mass, we are given the opportunity to listen to the words they contain and to reflect upon what they mean for us today as followers of Jesus.

The YouCat (Youth Catechism) describes the Bible as “a long letter written by God to each one of us.” As such, it is important that we read and reflect upon all of Scripture as a whole. It wouldn’t make sense to read the first and last few sentences of a letter and assume that we got the whole message. When we attend Mass regularly, we are given the opportunity to take in the meaning and the message of the scriptures little by little, building upon what we heard the week before. In the month of December, as we prepare to the celebrate the birth of Christ, may we also take some time to renew and expand our knowledge of the scriptures, the story of our faith, and the message of God for the whole world, made present through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

JANUARY- Liturgy of the Word: Music

In the month of January, we will explore the importance of music in liturgy. Sacred music is the beauty that invites prayer, it sets the stage for an encounter with Christ in the depths of our hearts. Music in the liturgy is intended to foster the full, conscious and active participation of all the faithful in the Church’s public prayer. By joining our hearts and minds together, music calls us into greater unity with God and with one another as we sing and praise God with one voice.

Throughout the month of January, may we learn to use our voices and our instruments to praise God with joy in song.

FEBRUARY- Liturgy of the Eucharist: The Last Supper

Jesus and his disciples ate a Passover meal together before His passion and death. The accounts of this meal, known as the Last Supper, provide the words and actions of Christ, when he instituted the Eucharist offering His Body and Blood under the species of bread and wine. When Jesus offered this Gift to His Apostles to eat and drink, he also commanded them to “do this in memory of me.”

Throughout the month of February, we will reflect on the words and actions of Jesus at the Last Supper and His call to the Apostles, and in turn each one of us, to remember Him and His sacrifice every time we receive the Eucharist.

MARCH- Liturgy of the Eucharist: Consecration

During the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the priest, acting in the person of Christ (persona Christi) proclaims the very words Jesus spoke at the Last Supper saying:

Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body, which will be given up for you” and “Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.”

When the priest says these words, he is consecrating the bread and wine, and it is thereby truly transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ.

During the month of March, we will reflect upon this great mystery of our faith, and the profound words of Christ when He instituted the Eucharist.

APRIL- Liturgy of the Eucharist: True Presence & Adoration

As Catholics, we believe in the True Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, that when the priest consecrates the bread and wine that they truly become the Body and Blood of Christ. Though they may still appear as bread and wine, with the eyes of faith we are called to believe that when Jesus said, “This is my body” and “This is my blood,” He meant it!

Throughout the month of April, may we reflect upon the incredible gift we have present in our Churches, the real and true presence of Christ with us and among us, and may we take the opportunity to spend time with Him in adoration!

MAY- Liturgy of the Eucharist: Communion & Community

In the month of May, we will explore our call to be in communion with Christ and one another through the celebration of Holy Mass. When we come together to celebrate Mass, we are there not only to receive Christ in the Eucharist and to strengthen our relationship with Him, but also to grow and support one another as a community of believers. Together with the Communion of Saints, may we continue to build up the Kingdom of God in Heaven and on Earth.

June- The Church: The Body of Christ

Through the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Eucharist, an inseparable union is shared between Jesus and all Christians. This union is so strong that it joins Christ and us like the head and members of the human body, and makes us one.

The leg is not a hand, and the eye is not an ear, but they are all members of the same body. In the same way we are all members of the Body of Christ that is the Church. With Christ as the head, we make up the Body of Christ using our own gifts and talents in our different roles to support and build up the Church. Let us always remember that the gifts and talents God has given us are for glorifying Him and serving our neighbour as members of the Mystical Body of Christ.

Dear Lord, your mother, Mary, had a long wait for You. She was unsure of what was in store, but from the moment of her conception she placed her trust in You. When we must wait, help us to wait as Mary did, with complete trust in You. And when our waiting is done, help us to accept the outcome with grace, just as Mary did. We ask this in Your Holy Name, Amen.

St. Ambrose… pray for us!

TUESDAY

MARCH 26
As Catholics we place all our hope in God, and we trust that he will keep all of his promises. This hope is what allows us to proclaim our creed as the people of God.

Let us pray together the Apostles’ Creed…

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth,

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.

He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

WEDNESDAY

MARCH 27
Christ Jesus,

We pray for world leaders; that they may use the power they have in the service of the poor; that they may seek opportunities to support workers, and create policies which show that they believe people to be more important than profit.

THURSDAY

MARCH 28

TUESDAY

MAY 21

Lord, I thank You for my peace;

For Your loving presence in my life;

For caring and supportive family and friends;

For earthly comforts generously provided;

For my good health and zest for living.

Remind me to share with the less fortunate. And should there come a time in the future when my life is not going as well, give me the grace to look back to today and remember with gratefulness
that there is always hope, for a bright new tomorrow if I put my faith and trust in You.

Amen.

WEDNESDAY

MAY 22
Dear God,

I know that you have a great plan for my life. Grant me patience to hear your voice, and knowledge to know when it comes. In your name we pray. Amen.

THURSDAY

MAY 23

One of the most difficult forms of prayer is that of silence - practicing the presence of God. Today let us try recognizing God’s presence, listening to His words instead of speaking our own.

Let us quiet our hearts and minds to hear the voice of God.

(moment of silence)…in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

FRIDAY

MAY 24

Dear God, we pray for everyone in our school. We pray for the staff and for all the students. May you allow all of our gifts and talents to shine today as we seek to witness of our faith to one another.

In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

MONDAY

MAY 27

Dear Jesus, today as we learn and go about our day, please help us to be responsible in our words and actions. Please give us the gift of responsibility and allow us to use it with the talents you have given us.

Amen.

TUESDAY

MAY 28

Holy Spirit,

Help me to open my mouth, in the right time and way, to share my faith with those I love. Grant me the courage to stand up for what is right, even if sometimes it feels like I am standing alone.

In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

WEDNESDAY

MAY 29

Dear Lord, we thank you for those friends in our lives that inspire us to think of You. Please help us to be a gift to others in both our words and actions in hope that they bring worship to You. Amen.

THURSDAY

MAY 30

For flowers that bloom about our feet,

For tender grass, so fresh, so sweet,

For song of bird, and hum of bee,

For all things fair we hear or see,

Father in heaven, we thank Thee!

For blue of stream and blue of sky,

For pleasant shade of branches high,

For fragrant air and cooling breeze,

For beauty of the blooming trees,

Father in heaven, we thank Thee!

God of creation be with us today. Amen.

FRIDAY

MAY 31

The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Today the Church celebrates Mary’s visit to her relative Elizabeth, who, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to Mary, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leapt for joy” (Lk 1:42-43). May we never hesitate to turn to our Mother, Mary, who brings our prayers to her Divine Son. And, like St. John the Baptist, may our souls leap for joy in the presence of Christ.

Let us now pray together the Hail Mary. Hail Mary… Amen.

MONDAY

JUNE 3

Lord, we thank you for every gift and talent that is present in this school. May you open our eyes to new gifts and new talents that You want us to discover. Help us to not be afraid in trying new things through You. Amen
TUESDAY

JUNE 4

Lord,

Teach me to be patient with life, with people, and with myself. Sometimes I try to hurry to much, and I push for answers before the time is right. Teach me to trust your sense of timing rather than my own, and to surrender my will to your greater and wiser plan. Amen.

WEDNESDAY

JUNE 5

St. Boniface
Dear Jesus, today we ask You to help us be humble, modest and not to brag about the gifts that you have given us. When we brag about the gifts and talents you have given us, it is far from an act of worship.  Please help us to use our gifts and talents to do only good things. Amen.

St. Boniface… pray for us!
THURSDAY

JUNE 6

On Sunday the Church celebrates Pentecost, the day when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and sent them to go forth and proclaim the good news to all the nations.

Come, Holy Spirit, and make us Pentecost people.

Let your wisdom and right judgment guide our decisions and temper our impulses. Let knowledge and understanding increase our empathy and compassion. Let reverence and awe fill us with gratitude and respect for all of creation. Give us the courage to witness boldly to our faith in word and deed. Through and with and in Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

St. Barnabas
Thank you God for the gift of our teachers! By their hard-work, patience, prayers, and encouragement we have grown academically & spiritually. By their presence each day they witness for us the love you have for all of your children. Keep them safe this summer and grant them rest and renewal for the coming year.

St. Barnabas … pray for us!
WEDNESDAY

JUNE 12

Holy Spirit,

There are some of us who have talent in speaking and others who are unafraid to get up in front of a crowd and talk. There are also those that are shy. We ask You to bless our lips with words that will only be gifts to others as we serve as witnesses of your great love. Amen.

THURSDAY

JUNE 13

St. Anthony of Padua
Dear God,

Today if we see someone having a rough day, help us not to simply walk by, may we smile and give them the gift of our time. Please help every little thing we do to have a positive impact on the lives of those we meet. In your name we pray. Amen.

St. Anthony… pray for us!

FRIDAY

JUNE 14

On the weekend we will celebrate Father’s Day.

TUESDAY

WEDNESDAY

JUNE 19

Lord,

May you help us to contribute our gifts and talents today at school, in the classroom, in the hallways, on the playground, and outside the walls of this school as we represent our faith and school community. Amen.
THURSDAY

JUNE 20

Lord, joy is a gift meant for sharing, to spread warmth and happiness around. Bless me with a cheerful heart that looks at the bright side of life. Bless me with a cheerful disposition, with a ready smile on my lips to bring new life, hope and courage to the hearts of the weary and overburdened. A smile costs nothing but creates much for it is something of no good to anyone till it is given away.

Should I meet someone too tired to smile let me give him one of mine for nobody needs a smile so much as someone who has none left to give.

In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

St. Aloysius Gonzaga…pray for us!
FRIDAY

JUNE 21

As we come to the end of the school year, we give You thanks for all the good things You have done for us.

We thank You for all who have shared in the work of our school this year and we ask You to bless us all in Your love as we continue to serve as your witnesses!

We offer this prayer, O God, through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

St. Aloysius…pray for us!

MONDAY

In your name we pray. Amen.

St. John the Baptist… pray for us!

Be with all of us through these summer months, that it may be a safe time of rest and relaxation.

Amen.
